Ready and at home

I may wish to be free from torture, but if the time comes for me to endure it, I'll wish to bear it courageously with bravery and honor. Wouldn't I prefer not to fall into war? But if war does befall me, I'll wish to carry nobly to wounds, starvation, and other necessities of war. Neither am I so crazy as to desire illness, but if I must suffer illness, I'll wish to do nothing rash or dishonorable. The point is not to with for these adversities, but for the virtue that makes adversities bearable.

고문을 피하고 싶겠지만, 만약 그것을 견뎌야 할 때가 온다면 용기를 내어 명예롭게 이겨내길 바라게 될 것입니다.

전쟁에 휘말리지 않기를 원하지만, 만약 전쟁이 벌어지게 된다면,

나는 상처와 굶주림을 비롯한 전쟁에 필요한 모든 것들을 당당하게 견뎌내기를 바라게 될 것입니다.

또한 병에 걸리지 않길 바라지만, 만약 병에 걸리게 되어도, 무모하거나 수치스러운 짓은 하지 않기를 바라게 될 것입니다.

중요한 것은 이러한 역경을 바라는 것이 아니라, 역경을 이겨낼 수 있는 덕목을 바라는 것입니다.
